![]() However, little effort was put into re-establishing the museum, with the department opting to not renew the building's lease in 1905. In July 1901, the Department of Militia and Defence negotiated a lease to house the museum in another building in Ottawa. ![]() ![]() The militia office originally planned to relocate the museum, storing its collections in an old military warehouse below Parliament Hill (present location of the Bytown Museum). The museum was eventually closed in 1896, with militia units that used the drill hall requiring more space, and to make room to accommodate a new shipment of Lee-Enfield rifles. As the museum continued to solicit donations for its collection the museum quickly outgrew its space in the drill hall, and appeals for a new facility were made by 1886. A proposal to establish a library operated by the museum was made in 1882, although these plans never came to fruition. Established with the intention to be a museum of national interest, the institution sought to preserve historical records and materials relating to the Canadian Militia, and any of its colonial predecessors. The collections of the Canadian War Museum originated from the collections of the Cartier Square Military Museum, established through a general order on 5 November 1880. The military museum served as the predecessor to the Canadian War Museum In addition to its permanent exhibition, the museum has hosted and organized a number of travelling exhibitions relating to Canadian military history.Ĭartier Square Drill Hall housed the Cartier Square Military Museum from 1880 to 1896. The museum's collection contains over 500,000 pieces of materials related to military history, including over 13,000 pieces of military art. Designed by Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Griffiths Rankin Cook Architects, the new Canadian War Museum building was opened to the public in 2005. Plans to expand the museum during the mid-1990s resulted in the construction of a new building at LeBreton Flats. Management of the museum was later assumed by the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (later renamed the Canadian Museum of History Corporation) in 1990. In the same year, the war museum was relocated from its original building to the former Public Archives of Canada building. The museum was operated by the Public Archives of Canada until 1967, when the National Museums of Canada Corporation was formed to manage several national institutions, including the war museum. The Canadian War Museum was formally established in 1942, although portions of the museum's collections originates from a military museum that operated from 1880 to 1896. The building also houses the Military History Research Centre, the museum's library and archives. The museum houses a number of exhibitions and memorials, in addition to a cafeteria, theatre, curatorial and conservation spaces, as well as storage space. The 440,000 square metres (4,700,000 sq ft) museum building is situated south of the Ottawa River in LeBreton Flats. The museum serves as both an educational facility on Canadian military history, in addition to serving as a place of remembrance. ![]() The Canadian War Museum (French: Musée canadien de la guerre CWM) is a national museum on the country's military history in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

One hundred years ago today, on August 4, 1914, German troops began pouring over the border into Belgium, starting the first major battle of World War I. I would like to have had better dialogue that threw a wrench in the overplayed WWII scenario, but the levels are laid out well with a good mix of small, medium, and large maps, and a variety of troops (tanks, planes, and a mix of infantry) keep the logistics and tactics of war fresh. To compound this, the difficulty per level was anything but predictable as I found myself retreating and using stalling tactics in the second level of the game but then wiping the floor with the French. Limiting your choices in the design-your-own-map gameplay is as inexcusable as not allowing your technology and army upgrades to continue onto the next chapter within the single-player campaign. ![]() This is the type of small bump that Strategy and Tactics hits more frequently than I would like. The settings only allow you to play as one or the other country on their specific map so only the American and German armies can fight on the Operation Overlord map instead of, say, Russia and France. While the difficulty ramps up and down unpredictably in the single-player campaign, there are hundreds of combinations that you can play through from the European, African, and Russian theaters according to your own defined settings though, you cannot choose a random country to find on any map. Aside from the cutscenes, the levels and campaign are fairly short, but this is only the beginning as the game allows you to play against the computer and local and online multiplayer in different pre-set and self-created scenarios. These introduce you to the generals behind the war (not factual), but leave a lot to be desired in the non-serious way they talk about the war. There are cutscenes that fill you in on the story, but these are mostly nice hand-drawn art overlaid with poor dialogue. It's actually been posited that Egyptians preferred to be clean-shaven but made synthetic beards to achieve the Osiris look. Pharaohs adopted a fake beard to mirror the appearance of the eternal ruler Osiris. There's the Radiant Crown, which is recorded to look like ram horns.Īnd that brings us to the Osiris beard. Its made up of golden flowers as a tribute to Ra the sun god. The vulture crown (left) was worn by wives and female pharaohs, The crown of justification (right) was supposed to be worn to signify the wearers' victory over the underworld and Osiris and their enemies. There are a few other ceremonial crowns and head wrappings so I'll lightning round them real quick. As well As Nefertiti, Akhenaten, Thutmose IV, and Akhenaten Tutankhamun was depicted wearing one in a few statues. I don't know why I like this one so much, I guess because it's so eyecatching, it's really flashy much like the Osiris crown. It was a much more ceremonial headdress, and largely worn for battle. ![]() There are no surviving Khepresh much like the other crowns. It was worn by the ruler of the southern half of Egypt Which represented the goddess Wadjet.Īll this context to talk about my favorite crown the Khepresh The bottom half of this crown was also another type of crown called the Deshret (right). The translation of pschent (left) is "two ladies" which tells us of the two matriarchs of Egypt unifying. which brings us to the double crown aka Pschent (as it was called by the greeks) Whom later united with another goddess Wadjet (she's actually the cobra you see adorning most of the headdresses and death masks) and formed one unified entity symbolizing the unity between upper and lower Egypt. The Hedjet belongs to the ruler of northern Egypt and symbolizes Horus, and goddess Nekhbet. like the Atef(left) worn by Osiris ruler of the underworld.Ītef bears a resemblance to Hedjet (right), Atef is largely just a Hedjet with two curled ostrich feathers. But lucky for us, they were depicted in hieroglyphs or drawings. There were actually several different crowns worn by pharaohs! though most of them didn't survive. They believed ground-up mummies were aphrodisiacs of all things- but that's neither here nor there. However, I believe the reason why the Nemes became visual shorthand for Pharaoh is because of the 1956 Film version of the Ten Commandments, as well as the fact that in the early 20s-40s Tutankhamun was all the rage, as he was one of the most preserved mummies ever found at that period of time and well people were nuts. Rameses III, and IV, Amenemhat III, Akhenaten, were also depicted wearing Nemes in their paintings and statues. Tutankhamun's Death Mask was depicted wearing a Nemes, ![]() The crown Tucker is wearing isn't actually a crown, it's a fiber headdress called a Nemes that covered the whole head and top of the shoulders. If we really wanted to add some historical accuracy points a lot of Egyptian royalty were recorded owning leopard skins but had a lot of stigmas associated with animal furs, especially wool.Ĭrowns and jewelry were what really separated the commoners from the pharaohs. All that to say the clothes are perfectly serviceable and they have a nice gold trim around the edges which I think makes them ornate enough. ![]() There have been depictions in art that show the largest evolution in the men's fashion were the addition of sheer blouses with pleated sleeves during the New Kingdom Era where it was thought Egypt to be at its most prosperous. There was a lot of variation in colors because Egyptians used a lot of minerals to dye their material, but white is the color most commonly associated with their clothes since it reflected the desert sun. I mostly want to talk about the crown because in terms of fashion ancient Egyptians mostly wore a combination of Shenti, linen kilts, and sandals, especially men. Again my math may be off because BC dates are confusing. Most of the popularized pharaohs especially Tutankhamun were recorded to rule in 1332-1323 BC a good 1,200 years before Cleopatra. Roughly 30 BC, I want to say 2,000 years ago but my calendar math has always been terrible. ![]() Just so we all have the same amount of knowledge here, the Ancient Egypt everyone typically refers to is Egypt pre-death of Cleopatra and the fall of the Ptolemaic Kingdom. I know everyone refers to this design as King Tuck which is easier and creates the allusion to King Tut(ankhamun) but Pharaohs are cooler, sorry not sorry. Okay turns out I do have a lot of thoughts about Pharaoh Tuck's design. Hattori also made four Vietnam commemorative knives for Boker of Germany which were marketed only in Europe. ![]() The tricky part is ending up in orbit near the station. This also means that once you’re within the two towers of the station you can leave your ship, and will have a lot less trouble making it inside the station. Makes some logical sense since the station stays in perfect orbit by itself, but anyways worth mentioning. But above the station there will be basically no gravitational pull, and below it the pull will be strong. Once you’re at that height from the sun, you will have little trouble staying there. One might think that it would be strong, but it basically only affects you from around the point the sun station is at. Good guide, but I think it’s worth mentioning that the entire point of this is to end up in the sun’s field of orbit. The achievement will unlock once you set foot inside.įunny, I actually tried this stunt just for the fun of it, decided it was too hard to make it into the game, abandoned it, and then found out there’s an achievement for it. Once you've exited the ship, spot the Station doorway and fly yourself into it. You need to do this quickly because it is unlikely that your ship will stay in perfect orbit by itself, and you risk getting stuck in your ship, or flung too far from the Station.Ĩ. When you feel confident the movement is matched, unbuckle and open the hatch. You can take your time at this point, since you should remain in reasonably close orbit with the Station.ħ. The autopilot 'match velocity' does not really work for this, so it's better to do it manually. You need to match the speed and orbit of the Station as close as you can. Once you're close to the Station you want to position the ship just above the doorway on the left. You'll need to reverse thrust a bit to slow down, and then continue the down thrust to bring you into low orbit with the Station.Ħ. Your forward velocity will be slightly fast so that you can catch up to the Station and this should also take you higher off the surface, but you can also up thrust a bit if you need to. When you start getting close, release the down thrust momentarily, to avoid crashing into the Sun. Once the Station and you are passing over the top point of the Sun you can then begin your descent into orbit.ĥ. Now wait 1-2 seconds, you should spot the Sun Station coming into view below you. When you release thrust, you may notice your approach velocity will decrease - that is ok, you don't need to maintain it.Ĥ. You should now be aiming towards the top quarter of the Sun and you accelerate until your approach velocity reaches about 400-450 m/s, then release thrust. You also need to maintain full forward thrust while you do this.ģ. You want Dark Bramble planet in the top centre of your view, and the lateral movement vector of the Sun visible on the left of screen and fairly steady. After the Sun Station is in full view rounding the horizon of the Sun, you want to roll to the right ( (hold) + ). Once you spot the Sun, lock onto it, aim for the centre and continue full thrust straight towards it.Ģ. You want to stay fast and low otherwise you risk the Moon interfering with your flight path. Head up to your ship, suit up, buckle in and take off towards the Sun. Here is a video of my approach to the Sun Station and matching speed with the doorway: Įxtra thanks again to fallouthirteen for the awesome videos found in the comments to this solution (they were wiped, see above edit), definitely give them a look if you're struggling!ġ. Once you think you've got everything lined up nicely and you're moving at the same pace, go ahead and unbuckle and try to open the hatch, if you pop out and can manage to jetpack your way to the door way, the achievement will be yours! Once you're lined up and are able to maneuver your ship right near the Sun Station, you should look into the open doorway and click the Left Stick so you can Match Velocity with that entryway. Get yourself into a nice orbit at around 2700m like suggested below and make sure your horizontal movement is pretty significant but your up and down movement is minimal.Īs the Sun Station approaches you, start to match speed with it, if you're in a good orbit you should only have to mainly worry about speed matching the station, and very mildly keeping yourself from getting sucked into the sun. As you approach the Sun, you're going to want to have the Sun Station orbiting HORIZONTALLY (I did mine with it orbiting clockwise or left around the Sun). It's actually pretty easy once you know how to.Very helpful! (The videos are also especially helpful) But here is my advice. ![]() Just orbit in front of it and make sure the floor of the ship is pointed at the station so that you don't get flung to the side of the ship. ![]() You just have to board it not really "land" on it. ![]()
